Suspect is being held in the wake of drive-by
Police have arrested a man accused of injuring two people Monday night in a gang-related drive-by shooting that capped a week of gun violence on the East Side.
City Councilwoman Ivy Taylor, who represents the area, called for a community meeting to discuss the recent shootings, which have killed one man and injured a dozen residents — including a child — in five drive-by incidents that began Dec. 20.
In Monday's incident, two officers with SAPD's gang unit, which has increased its East Side presence in light of the shootings, were watching a known gang location in the 500 block of Corliss Street about 7:15 p.m. when they heard numerous gunshots, according to an incident report.

Grants money generated in April by A Night in Old San Antonio, or NIOSA, will support 13 programs and projects, including the S.T.A.R. program — Students Together Achieving Revitalization — in which college students and volunteers work together to rehabilitate houses in historic neighborhoods.
Other initiatives funded with the grants include a multimedia map of historic San Antonio, a radio series about local preservation, videotaped oral histories, and structural upgrades at historic buildings in San Antonio and South Texas.
“This year, a record number of community grant applications were received by the society: 54 structural applications and six educational applications,” Nancy Avellar, the group's president, said Tuesday in a news release.
The next call for grant applications to fund rehabilitation of structures at least 50 years old will be issued in August.
Since 2000, the society has awarded nearly $2 million through the annual grant program.
